artist's statement

Some biography
I began painting in 1997 after careers as an applied linguist and as a lawyer. My work is mainly representational, including landscapes, streetscapes, figures, and works from imagination. I work in oils now, and in watercolor, after years of concentrating on acrylics.

Exhibits
I have shown my paintings in Barcelona, Florence, Terni, and Montecastello, at the Cooper Art Center in Albuquerque, at the various venues in Albuquerque where the Artists 'Round Town co-op exhibits, at the On-Track Gallery in Albuquerque, and elsewhere. Some examples of my work are here.

Philosophy and goals
I paint to convey what is poignant, beautiful, or intriguing in the subject, whether that is a village street in Umbria or a study of shoppers in Kyoto. I'm hoping that viewers will find connections of heart and mind to such paintings.

Training
My art training includes two School of Visual Arts international extension programs in 2001 and 2002, another program at La Romita School near Terni in Umbria, Italy in 2004, and Sue Buck's painting workshops in Albuquerque in 2005 and 2006. In 2007 and 2009 I was a resident at the International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Montecastello di Vibio, also in Umbria. I was a resident in the Painting program at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2008. In 2010 and 2012 I studied impressionist philosophy and method with Jerry Fresia in Lenno, Italy. In 2014 I painted in Cuba and also studied plein air painting with Thomas J. Kitts in Tuscany. I participated in Lori Putnam's plein air painting workshop in Sicily in 2015. For years now I have drawn and painted figure studies and portraits from life, for example, at Pietro Palladini's studio in Corrales, New Mexico and at The Artist's Studio in Albuquerque.

During the 2020 pandemic I created a series of political cartoons which can be seen under Comic Arts.
